Book Your Jungle SafariDiscover the natural mineral licks that sustain our wildlife
To ensure the health and well-being of wild animals during the summer season, the Forest Department has started placing salt licks at strategic locations inside the Atei Reserve Forest under Ghatgaon Forest Range. The salt licks, which mainly contain essential minerals such as sodium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and zinc, have been installed near existing water troughs so that animals visiting the area for drinking water are naturally attracted to consume the mineral supplements. These minerals play a vital role in muscle development, bone strength, immunity enhancement, and overall health, thereby helping prevent illnesses and fatalities caused by extreme summer conditions. An official from the Ghatgaon Forest Range informed that the installation work commenced this week and that salt licks will be placed at 8–10 locations within each forest section, with special priority given to areas frequently visited by elephants and other large wildlife. In addition, the Forest Department is undertaking measures to construct new water troughs and ensure sufficient water supply in existing ones to maintain hydration for wildlife throughout the summer, further strengthening the ecosystem and supporting animal survival during harsh climatic conditions.
